About Meikles Stores

Meikles Stores Limited

The first Meikle Store in the then Rhodesia was opened in Fort Victoria (Masvingo) in 1892, when Thomas Meikle, with his brothers Jack and Stewart, saw a business opportunity to supply a starved market and moved across the border from South Africa. The businesses grew rapidly, with Stores being opened in quick succession countrywide.

By the mid 1970’s Thomas Meikle Stores was a thriving Group of Department Stores and supermarkets, having acquired the Greatermans and Checkers brands in the country. The supermarkets were later separated under the TM logo as a separate company. The department Stores were consolidated under the Meikles banner, later adding Barbours to the portfolio and, from the early 1990’s, the Clicks franchise.

There have been a number of adjustments to the numbers and structure of the various outlets to streamline the organization since then, the latest at the end of 2010 being the rebranding of the Clicks Stores as ‘Meikles Home and Beauty’.

The Meikles department and chain store group provides customers with the opportunity to purchase a complete range of competitively priced, quality goods for the family and the home in every major centre in Zimbabwe. Attractive credit facilities can be arranged at all Stores and Branches for qualifying customers.

The Thomas Meikle Stores group currently comprises eight department stores: Barbours, Greatermans and Meikles Department stores in Harare’s busy Central Business District, including the specialized Hardware outlet in Orr Street; a Barbours Store in Sam Levy’s Village, Borrowdale, and Meikles Department Stores in Bulawayo, Gweru, Mutare and Masvingo.

The Stores offer a selection of electronic and household appliances, ladies’ and men’s fashions, stylish clothes for boys’ and girls, furniture to suit every taste, kitchenware, luggage and travel accessories, a wide range of shoes and footwear, baby and toddler gear , toys, and other family ‘goodies’. Hardware is now a key department in all Meikles stores, offering an excellent range of quality products.

Meikles also operates eleven chain stores, all but two of which are branded as ‘Home & Beauty’. These stores have taken the best of the well loved products previously stocked under the ‘Clicks’ banner and have added a wider range of exciting Home products. The Home and Beauty Stores currently operate in Sam Levy’s Village, Borrowdale, First Street and Eastgate Harare, Chisipite and out of town in Mutare, Masvingo, Bulawayo, Kwekwe and Gweru. Hardware and appliances stores are operated in Kadoma and Marondera.

The Meikles name has been synonymous with products of consistent and reliable quality for almost 120 years, and, with current and planned developments, the tradition will continue with the provision of the latest in style and technology, at most competitive prices, to today’s Zimbabwean consumer.
